Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin
Example of an exchange with America
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (second from right), lieutenant of the Württemberg Armee, asked for leave of absence in 1863 to take part in American Civil War as an observer. There for the first time he had the chance to study the deployment of balloons for observation and he had the chance to fly with one. Later he invented the so-called Zeppelin airship.
